The Smith and Hawken Story
We started in a converted barn in 1979 because we couldn’t find garden tools that didn’t break after one season. Two former organic farmers and a blacksmith decided to make their own—tools that actually fit human hands and could handle rocky New England soil. Today, we’re still in that same barn (though it’s bigger now), still making tools the slow way: forged steel, turned ash handles, and a lot of testing in actual dirt. Our customers tend to be the types who know the difference between a soil knife and a trowel, who save seeds from year to year, and who’d rather repair something good than buy something new.
The thing is, we never meant to become a business. We just wanted tools that worked. But word spread the way it does in small towns—through garden clubs, farmers’ markets, and over fence lines between neighbors. Soon we were making tools for friends, then friends of friends, then people driving up from Boston with sketches of exactly what they needed. Each request taught us something new about how real gardeners work.
Now, forty-some years later, we supply tools to botanical gardens, urban farmers, and weekend gardeners who take their tomatoes seriously. We’ve added outdoor furniture built with the same obsessive attention—cedar potting benches that won’t wobble, iron gates that develop a perfect patina. But we still fix every tool that comes back to us, because we’d rather keep something good in the ground than in a landfill. Some of our original customers are passing their tools down to grandchildren now. That’s the kind of timeline we build for.
