Professional Tools for Passionate Gardeners

No mass production. No shortcuts. Just expertly crafted garden tools that work as hard as you do.

What Sets Our Tools Apart

Built for Decades

Your grandfather’s tools lasted forever. So do ours. Each piece is drop-forged from high-carbon steel and fitted with ash handles selected for their grain strength—because replacing tools every season shouldn’t be part of gardening.

Designed Where Gardens Grow

We test our tools in working gardens across different climates and soil types. That’s why our cultivator’s tines are spaced for real weed roots, not laboratory specifications.

Balanced by Hand

Every tool is individually weighted and tested in actual garden soil. Our craftspeople adjust each piece until it feels like an extension of your arm, reducing fatigue during those long spring planting days.

Repairable, Not Replaceable

Broken handle? Worn blade? We stock replacement parts for tools made 30 years ago. Our repair guides walk you through simple fixes, and our workshop offers restoration for well-loved pieces.

Small-Batch American Made

Our Connecticut workshop produces just 200 tools daily. Each bears the maker’s stamp—a promise that someone who understands gardening crafted what you’re holding.

Best Sellers

Hidden Storage

Lift the cushion to reveal 6 cubic feet of weatherproof storage. Finally, a place for those cushions, garden gloves, and the good pruning shears you don’t want to trek back to the shed for.

All-Weather Wicker

Hand-woven resin wicker that looks like your grandmother’s porch furniture but handles rain, snow, and years of sun without cracking. No more hauling cushions inside at the first drop.

Eldridge Wicker Square

A generous outdoor ottoman that works harder than furniture this comfortable should—equally at home holding drinks, books, or your feet after a long day in the garden.

Modular Design

Pairs with our Eldridge chairs and sofas, or stands alone as extra seating when the whole neighborhood shows up. The flat top means it actually works as a coffee table, not just in theory.

Quick-Dry Cushion

Four inches of marine-grade foam wrapped in solution-dyed acrylic that dries in under an hour. Spill your iced tea or get caught in a summer storm—this cushion won’t hold water or grow mildew.

The Smith and Hawken Story

We started in a converted barn in 1979 because we couldn’t find garden tools that didn’t break after one season. Two former organic farmers and a blacksmith decided to make their own—tools that actually fit human hands and could handle rocky New England soil. Today, we’re still in that same barn (though it’s bigger now), still making tools the slow way: forged steel, turned ash handles, and a lot of testing in actual dirt. Our customers tend to be the types who know the difference between a soil knife and a trowel, who save seeds from year to year, and who’d rather repair something good than buy something new.

The thing is, we never meant to become a business. We just wanted tools that worked. But word spread the way it does in small towns—through garden clubs, farmers’ markets, and over fence lines between neighbors. Soon we were making tools for friends, then friends of friends, then people driving up from Boston with sketches of exactly what they needed. Each request taught us something new about how real gardeners work.

Now, forty-some years later, we supply tools to botanical gardens, urban farmers, and weekend gardeners who take their tomatoes seriously. We’ve added outdoor furniture built with the same obsessive attention—cedar potting benches that won’t wobble, iron gates that develop a perfect patina. But we still fix every tool that comes back to us, because we’d rather keep something good in the ground than in a landfill. Some of our original customers are passing their tools down to grandchildren now. That’s the kind of timeline we build for.
